A Touch of Mischief.

Lark Brewing Co. had already built something people loved. Tucked into the picturesque Virginia countryside, the brewery has become known for its welcoming atmosphere, strong local following, and a personality that extends well beyond the beer itself.

As the brand approached its second anniversary, it had become clear internally that Lark’s visual identity could be improved to better reflect the experience guests were having on-site. Rather than reinventing the brand, this refresh focused on uncovering what was already working and creating a more cohesive system around it. The identity was rebuilt with a focus on refinement, personality, and long-term flexibility.

Lark’s existing script logo had strong recognition and plenty of charm, making it an ideal component to carry forward. The wordmark was carefully rebuilt from the ground up through hand sketching and vector refinement, preserving the familiar character while resolving small inconsistencies throughout the letterforms.

Subtle adjustments to spacing, rhythm, stroke transitions, and overall balance resulted in a confident new mark that performs more consistently across applications. The refreshed wordmark became the foundation for the broader identity system and set the tone for everything that followed.

One of the clearest opportunities in the refresh was leaning further into Sugar, the brewery’s resident pup and unofficial mascot. We developed a series of custom illustrations explored different poses, expressions, and levels of detail before landing on a final set that balanced recognizability with graphic simplicity.

These illustrations became much more than decorative assets. Integrated into secondary logos, supporting graphics, and playful typographic moments, Sugar helped introduce a layer of personality that feels distinctive to Lark and impossible to separate from the brand.

To support the refreshed identity, a photography direction was developed around candid moments, direct flash, and a compelling sense of place. Rather than polished product photography or heavily staged brewery imagery, the goal was to capture the energy of being at Lark: mid-conversation, half-empty drinks, imperfect snapshots, the atmosphere between the highlights.

This approach extends the identity beyond logos and graphics, creating a visual system that’s easy for the team to recreate and scale over time. This becomes a framework for helping the brand stay recognizable, expressive, and true to itself as it continues to grow.
